History of Jaipur

Jaipur, founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, was one of India’s earliest planned cities. Designed by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, it followed the principles of Vastu Shastra. Known as the "Pink City," for its terracotta-colored buildings in the old city, its distinctive color symbolizes hospitality. Jaipur became the capital of Rajasthan post-independence. Rich in history, it boasts architectural marvels like Amber Fort, City Palace, and Jantar Mantar, reflecting its royal and scientific legacy.
How to reach Jaipur

Jaipur is well-connected by road, rail, and air, making it easily accessible:
By Air
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is about 13 km from the city center. It has regular domestic flights and limited international connections.
By Train
Jaipur Junction is a major railway station, linked to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Luxury trains like the Palace on Wheels also include Jaipur in their itinerary.
By Road
Bus Services: State-run and private buses operate to and from nearby cities, including luxury and Volvo options.
Driving: Jaipur is connected by national highways, including NH8. It is about 270 km from Delhi, and buses, taxis, or private cars are convenient options.

Where to stay in Jaipur?

We stayed at Gypsy Monkey, near Bus Stand. It cost us ₹1200 ($ 13.86) per room. Dormitory are also available.

City Palace of Jaipur

The City Palace of Jaipur, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, is a stunning blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Highlights include Chandra Mahal, housing royal artifacts; Mubarak Mahal, showcasing textiles; and Pritam Niwas Chowk with its seasonal gates. The Diwan-i-Khas features massive silver urns, while intricate designs adorn the Peacock Gate.
Tickets will be available at the counter and can be booked online.
Ticket: ₹400 per person
Timing: 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvel of astronomical architecture. It’s a testament to India's scientific heritage. It features 19 instruments, including the world’s largest stone sundial, the Samrat Yantra. These devices measure time, track celestial bodies, and predict eclipses. Timings: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets: Approximately ₹50 per person.
Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal, or the "Water Palace," is a stunning architectural marvel located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. It blends Mughal and Rajput styles. The palace appears to float on water, with only its top floor visible as the lower levels remain submerged. Best viewed during sunrise or sunset, it’s a serene escape amidst Jaipur’s bustling charm.

Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal, or the "Palace of Winds," is a five-story architectural marvel in Jaipur. Designed in red and pink sandstone, it features 953 intricately carved windows (jharokhas), allowing cool breezes to flow through. Originally built for royal women to observe street festivals unseen, it’s a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles. It offers panoramic city views from the top.

Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort stands majestically on the Aravalli Hills, overlooking Jaipur. Originally a defensive structure, it later became a retreat for the royal family. The fort’s highlights include the Madhavendra Bhavan, a palace with stunning frescoes and interconnected suites. The fort is steeped in history and folklore, including the tale of Nahar Singh Bhomia’s spirit, said to have influenced its name, meaning "Abode of Tigers." Its charm lies in the blend of history, architecture, and scenic vistas, making it a must-visit.


Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort is a majestic structure atop the Aravalli Hills, overlooking the Amber Fort and Maota Lake. Known as the "Fort of Victory," it was a military stronghold safeguarding Jaipur’s treasures. The fort houses the world’s largest cannon on wheels, the Jaivana Cannon. Its underground water storage system and palaces reflect architectural brilliance. Jaigarh Fort is a testament to Rajput's strength and ingenuity.
Amer Fort

Amer Fort is a magnificent hilltop fortress, known for its blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture, the fort features ornate courtyards, grand halls, and intricate carvings. Highlights include the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), and the Sukh Niwas with its cooling water channels. Overlooking Maota Lake offers panoramic views and is illuminated beautifully at night. Elephant rides and sound-and-light shows add to the experience. Amer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best time to visit Jaipur

The weather is sunny throughout the year with extreme heat. September to March is the best time to visit. Try to avoid summer as the heat and humidity will be too much.
